Set in the late 1940s, the story tells of the friendship between two Maori boys and between three families - two of them Maori, and one Pakeha. The events which take place threaten the patterns of rural life. And the personal discoveries made by the central characters show the strength of traditional lifestyles which are to be reinforced by the events of that time.
