Rodrigo Sorogoyen, President of the Jury of the 64th Semaine de la Critique

Spanish film director, screenwriter, and producer Rodrigo Sorogoyen to be President of the Jury of the 64th Semaine de la Critique.

Moroccan journalist Jihane Bougrine, French-Canadian cinematographer Josée Deshaies, Indonesian producer Yulia Evina Bhara, and Oscar-winning British actor Daniel Kaluuya will accompany him on his mission.

Born in 1981, Rodrigo Sorogoyen belongs to a generation that thrives both in television and cinema, bringing a very political perspective on the world around him. With two series to his name - RIOT POLICE and THE NEW YEARS - the director casts a harsh light on society, questions human nature, and brilliantly unites both critics and audiences around a popular body of work.

After studying at ECAM in Madrid, he founded Caballo Films and directed his first feature film, STOCKHOLM, which he co-wrote with screenwriter Isabel Peña, who was to become his closest collaborator.
Together, they have created staggeringly intense, masterfully directed films: MAY GOD SAVE US, THE REALM, and MOTHER  - the eponymous short film was nominated for the Oscars in 2017. The Madrilenian filmmaker made his debut in Cannes with THE BEASTSstarring Marina Foïs and Denis Ménochet. The film went on to win 9 Goya Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, as well as the César for Best Foreign Film.

“La Semaine de la Critique unequivocally demonstrates its commitment to supporting and believing in young filmmakers. A parallel selection that only accepts short films and first or second features allows for a unique springboard to launch and strengthen young directors’ careers. Without such spaces, we would keep rewarding, screening, and giving voice only to those who have already established their paths, overlooking emerging concerns and forms.”

Rodrigo Sorogoyen and his jury will present La Semaine de la Critique’s AMI Paris Grand Prize for Best feature film, the French Touch Prize of the Jury, the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award for Best actor or actress, and the Leitz Cine Discovery Prize for Best short film.

The films selection of the 64th edition will be unveiled on Monday 14, April.

La Semaine de la Critique will be held in Cannes May 14th to 22nd.
