A Marvada carne Strong Meat / Sacrée barbaque
by André Klotzel
Quim lives alone in a secluded house in the South of Brazil with a goat, a dog and a few hens. He is haunted by two obsessions : to find a wife and eat a big steak. He leaves his house to fulfill his two dreams. After having given a very special tobacco to a strange aborigene he meets on his way, he comes to a hamlet where Carula lives. This charming young girl is looking for a fiancé, but her quest has remained unsuccessful up to now in spite of her many prayers, invocations and menaces to Saint Anthony. Quim on whose head Saint Anthony has fallen is marked by fate as the ideal prey. He is all the more resilient to Carula’s proposals as she lures him into believing that her father will kill an ox for their wedding. After some very strange tests, Quim and Carula flee, they get married, have children. They would be perfectly happy if Quim wasn't still haunted by the unquenched desire to have the steak. To make his dream come true, he’ll challenge the devil, he'll go to town where he is robbed, he'll take part in the looting of a supermarket and he will eventually relish the grilled steak he craved for so long with his family and his friends.
