Hector Malot… is not the biopic of the author of Nobody’s Boy but it touches upon the core of the novel - loneliness and neglect - through the bitter-sweet, often funny and always moving portrayal of Sofia, a young lady who never seems to fit, whether it be on a picture or at a party. “I look for beauty in what seems ‘ugly’ or mundane” says Jacqueline Lentzou, the filmmaker. And the film manages to find wonder and depth in gazes, silences and awkward moments as well as in karaoke sessions: “Where was I? How was I to know?”
