FUERZAS BÁSICAS
by Pablo Giles
After their mother passed away, Daniel and Luis - two brothers who are passionate about soccer - are raised by their strict disciplinarian father. But one day, a professional offer severs the bond, separating the two brothers. As Luis fulfills his dream, Daniel struggles with his frustration, envy, and guilt. Over two decades, distance rips them apart, until Daniel has his brother Luis’s future in his hands.
In Mexico, Fuerzas Básicas is the name of the junior section of a professional soccer team.
If the film is set in this world, it is really about brotherhood, the passage of time and the deep wounds we carry along with us, as well as our (in)ability to heal them. The director explores the impact of bad communication within the family, which he sees as a major cause of our personal and societal ailments. A classic drama, a family saga set in a man’s world where two brothers and their father gradually drift apart. Here, football becomes a place of severance and bonding, reflecting their isolation and unattended wounds. To capture the passage of time over two decades the story unfolds through ellipses, allowing us to follow these characters as they journey through their moral dilemmas. In this naturalistic film, Pablo Giles relies on his fine work with actors to trigger visceral reactions. Lastly, the transitions through image and sound between the small town and the large city enhance the contrasts of that Mexican epic, highlighting the changes in time and locations throughout the story.
