Lana, a young doubt-ridden filmmaker, is in a relationship with Lourdes, the daughter of a famous novelist who uses her family history in her literary work. One day, the Earth receives a message from an alien planet, unveiling the presence of other lifeforms in the universe. As Lana seeks the purpose of the news, Lourdes aspires to free herself from her mum’s stifling burden. Their journeys start to converge into a moving exploration of the limits of artistic expression and the elusive nature of fulfilment.

DNA at the Speed of Light revisits several questions that are dear to Isadora Neves Marques: can we ever really understand one another, how can we resist modern contradictions between our own narcissism and a moving heightened sensitivity to generalised angst. The characters are driven by a deep empathy, a hint of subdued, ironic humour, a biting political tone, and LGBTQI+ issues that span all of the director’s work. Visually, the project will be informed by her practice as a contemporary visual artist: elegant aesthetics in the composition of the frames, a precise mise-en-scène, soft and ethereal lighting to create, in each and every frame, a beauty that is both embodied and melancholic.
