After several alarming research papers on children’s mental health, an experimental artistic residency scheme was tested in various schools. Margot, a 30-year-old theatre director herself on antidepressants, is hired to direct a musical with secondary-school pupils in order to restore their hope.
à la recherche du miraculeux is a pop project with a bittersweet tone that asks: How can we re-enchant ourselves in a disenchanted world? It challenges our intimate and political sadness, our loss of meaning, and thirst for life. In her impactful, nurturing films, the director shapes multifarious - although not all that contradictory - soulful movements. Endearing, sensitive, and eccentric characters, along with fine acting, rhythm, and editing are the ingredients of Mathilde Chavannes’s melancholic, restless humour. They make up the distinctive tone of this new voice in French cinema.
