Waller is a railway man who could have retired a long time ago but he keeps on exploring the sole railway line which was entrusted to him. While he walks along the tracks and checks the signals and points, he relives, stop after stop, the main events of his life - when he started his job, the war, the love of Angelica who died in childbirth, his daughter Rosina he raised alone and the photo album which is the only possession he wishes to bequeath to her.
